“Bisque” is the stage that the pottery is in when its ready to paint. That means the clay piece (greenware) has been fired once. At the bisque stage it is porous and ready for paint (glaze). We have many different pieces of bisque, including mugs, bowls, tiles, plates, platters, animals, piggy banks and just about anything else you can think of.
All of our paints are a water-based glaze so they are easy to clean up and won’t stain clothing. We recommend two to three coats of each color of paint. Glazes, by their nature, are vitreous. When glaze is fired onto a piece it is like covering the piece with glass. It seals the piece making it stain resistant and food safe. Once glazed and fired the pieces can go in the dishwasher.
The possibilities are endless! We suggest you look around for some inspiration before you come. If you need inspiration, we have books for ideas, as well as stencils, tools and sponges. Look at our Pinterest page with tons of ideas: https://www.pinterest.es/studioceramicaestepona/ideas-para-pintar-cer%C3%A1mica/. We have lots of experience, so don’t hesitate to ask a staff member for help or ideas. That’s what we are here for!
When you’re done, you’ll leave your finished pottery with us so we can glaze and fire it. Your piece is shelved in the order it is completed, then glazed again to make sure everything is sealed. Only half of the piece can be glazed at a time and each half must dry before continuing. After your pottery is glazed and dried, it is ready to be loaded in our kiln. The pottery must be balanced on top of “stilts,” otherwise, the glaze will cause it will stick to the shelves. We try to maximize all of the space, so loading the kiln is kind of like a big puzzle.
Once the kiln is full we’re ready to fire. The kiln gets up to 1020 degrees Celsius. The firing process takes 24-28 hours from start to finish, and we can only open the kiln once it has cooled back down. Most orders are completed within 5-6 days.
